HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL
Tamondong-Eugenio Midwifery School was founded in 1978 by Dr. Soledad Tamondong-Eugenio, in answer to the needs for health workers in Southwestern Mindanao particularly the far flung areas of Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao, North Cotabato, South Cotabato and Sarangani which are populated by Muslims. Lumads, and Christians.
On its opening in June 1978, the school accepted 65 midwifery students coming from poor families. This first batch of students graduated in 1980 and did well in the Board examinations.
The name of the school was changed to Sultan Kudarat Educational Institution in 1982. By 1985 the 2-year Midwifery was granted Government Recognition #101 s. 1985 and by 1993 the school was formally incorporated.
The demand for nurses overseas challenged SKEI to offer a 4-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) in 1984. The first group graduated in 1988, after which Government Recognition #033 s. 1988 was granted for nursing in the same year.
SKEI suffered conflagration in 1992 resulting to great losses in buildings, equipments and records. However with God’s blessings, peoples’ trusts, confidence and cooperation, especially from the personnel, the school quickly recovered.
SKEI has produced many nursing and midwifery graduates who were employed abroad. Majority of these graduates were working in the Middle-East, Europe, United Kingdom, North America, Australia, East Asia and Pacific Regions. Moreover muslim nursing and midwifery graduates were given priority to work in the Middle East countries, even without taking the licensure examination.
With the increasing demands for nurses and health providers, SKEI’s enrollment also increased, thus reaching one thousand students in school years 2003 to 2006.
Through the years, SKEI improved her facilities to be able to serve better her clientele. Thus in January 2007, construction of an additional 50 bed hospital building started, to convert the hospital into tertiary status for training the nursing students.
The school also added her services by offering TESDA accredited skills training such as caregiver, and the call center starting June 2007. The school’s facilities were further augmented by the construction of a modern speech laboratory, which is needed to train the students in their oral communication in English to make them more globally competitive in the future.
